A self-initiated 10-year analysis of antidepressant medication utilization patterns conducted independently while working as a pharmacy procurement analyst. Extracted and cleaned 10 years of pharmacy utilization data for the top 200 drugs, standardized drug names across NDC codes and manufacturer variations, and built a multi-layered analytical framework from scratch.
The study analyzed 6 antidepressants (Bupropion, Citalopram, Escitalopram, Mirtazapine, Sertraline, Trazodone) across 5 analytical dimensions: overall utilization trends, prescription volume by drug, quantity per prescription, relative market share shifts, and SSRI vs Non-SSRI category-level index growth using 2015 as the base year.
Key findings: overall antidepressant usage rose significantly from 2018 onward, with a notable acceleration post-2020 consistent with pandemic-related mental health trends. SSRIs grew their index from 100 in 2015 to approximately 145 by 2022 before stabilizing. Sertraline and Escitalopram gained market share while Citalopram declined. Trazodone 100mg showed the highest quantity intensity at 467 units per prescription. Category-level index growth showed that volume declines in individual drugs do not necessarily reflect overall category decline - a non-obvious insight with direct procurement planning implications.
